Easy Halloween Appetizers

Halloween food is one of the most exciting parts of the spooky season. Even better, these spooky Halloween appetizers are so simple, you can practically make them with your eyes closed! (though maybe keep ’em open so you don’t accidentally grab the hot sauce instead of the salsa!).

When it comes to creepy-crawly finger foods, this is a fun recipe that everyone will gobble up at your next Halloween bash.

Supplies Needed:

Ingredients & Why They Work:

  • Tri-Colored Peppers: Colored peppers add a vibrant pop of color and a sweet crunch. Plus, their natural “mummy shape” makes this recipe a no-brainer!
  • Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry (thawed): Pepperidge Farm’s flaky pastry dough creates the perfect mummy wraps.
  • Cottage Cheese Queso: Cottage Cheese is the creamy, cheesy filling that makes these peppers extra delicious. (You can use my recipe from the blog or your favorite store-bought kind.)
  • White Cheese: Use your favorite white cheese for the eyeballs! Mozzarella or provolone works great.
  • Black Olives: Black olives are perfect for the pupils, giving your mummies that spooky stare.
  • Salsa and Ranch Dressing: These are perfect for dipping because everything’s better with a dip, right?

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Slice the peppers in half lengthwise and remove the seeds.
  3. Fill a piping bag with the cottage cheese queso and pipe it into the pepper halves.
  4. Cut 1/4″ strips of puff pastry. Stretch each strip a bit and loosely wrap it around the filled pepper, leaving a small gap for the eyes.
  5. Place the cheese eyeballs and olive pupils in the gaps on the peppers.
  6. Place the peppers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown.
  8. While the peppers are baking use the Wilton tip to cut circles out of the white cheese for the eyeballs. Use the smaller Wilton tip to cut circles out of the olives for the pupils.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly
  10. Add the eyes and then serve with salsa and ranch dressing.

“Stretch it” Tip:  Have leftover puff pastry? Use cookie cutters to make spooky shapes and bake them alongside the peppers for an extra festive treat.

Another thing that we love about these Halloween snacks is that they aren’t a dessert, but more of a Halloween party menu item that serves as a tasty food to fill everyone up in between all the candy!

Savory flavors make this a themed food that not only adds a festive touch to your party table but provides a great way to serve more than just sweets during the Halloween season.

FAQs:

  • Can I use a different filling? Sure! Cream cheese, guacamole, humus, or even a spicy bean dip would be delicious.
  • My puff pastry is sticking. What should I do? Lightly flour your work surface and rolling pin to prevent sticking.
  • Can I freeze these?  Yes, you can freeze them before baking. Just bake them straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
  • What can I serve these with?  These are great with tortilla chips,  as part of a Halloween snack board, or even alongside some spooky sliders.
