FAQs
What can I substitute for peanuts if someone has a nut allergy?
Many people are allergic to both peanuts and tree nuts, so the safest substitutes are roasted pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or soy nuts. They all deliver a yummy nutty flavor and satisfying crunch. Our recipe also calls for Reese’s dipped pretzels, which you can swap out for regular chocolate-dipped pretzels.
How can I make my Halloween potluck dish more fun?
There are no traditional “Halloween foods,” so making your Halloween party potluck dish festively freaky is all about colors and decorations! Easily make desserts pop with seasonal serving cups, shaped candies, colored drizzles, and mini toys.
For savory dishes, top with olive eyeballs, spaghetti spiderwebs, themed toys, or even use food coloring to draw cute patterns and designs, like little ghost faces or witch’s hats.

Halloween Monster Munch Mix Recipe
Ingredients for our Monster Munch recipe:
- 4 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 4.25 oz Reese’s dipped pretzels
- 10 oz package Ghoul’s Mix m&ms
- 1 cup peanuts
- 1/2 cup candy corn
- 12 oz Wilton white candy melts
- Wilton candy melts orange
- Wilton candy melts purple
- Wilton candy eyes (pro tip: I’ve tried the cheap ones and the black dye streaks at runs – we love that Wilton’s candy eyes are mounded and made in such a way that they last!)
Directions for making Monster Munch:
1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
2. With a rolling pin, crush the package of Reese’s dipped pretzels until they are reduced to about a quarter of their original size.
3. Combine cereal pretzels, m&ms, peanuts, and candy corn in a large bowl.
Pro tip: to make your Halloween snack mix Pinterest picture-worthy, reserve some m&ms and candy corn pieces to place on top of the monster munch. Then the vibrant colors really pop!
4. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the Wilton white candy melts in the microwave for 45 seconds, then stir. Heat for another 30 seconds and stir again. Continue stirring in between 30 second intervals until completely melted and smooth. Be careful to not burn the melts! If you do, you’ll need to toss the batch and start a new one.
5. Pour the melted candy over the cereal mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until everything is well covered. Spread onto your parchment-lined cookie sheet.
6. Place a handful of orange candy melts directly into your Wilton disposable decorating bag (this will cut down on your cleanup). Repeat with the purple candy melts, placing them in a separate decorating bag. Place both bags in the microwave and use the same heating intervals as above to melt the colored candies.
7. Cut a small hole into the tip of each bag. Drizzle some fun purple and orange zig-zags and squiggles over the cereal mixture.
8. Sprinkle reserved candies over the top while the melty decoration is still warm, gently pressing down on the candies so they stick.
9. Let the snack mix set at room temperature for 30 minutes, then break apart and serve!
Variations
- Use dark, milk, or white melted chocolate in place of candy melts.
- Substitute microwave popcorn or Corn Chex for Rice Chex.
- Use any salted, unsalted, or dry roasted nuts and seeds.
- Use regular or mini M&Ms for a change of color or texture.
- Add Reese’s pieces or almond bark for even more flavor
Tips and Tricks
- If the melted candies aren’t creamy and smooth enough, add a splash of coconut oil or sunflower oil and stir in a little at a time until you achieve the correct consistency.
- Candy eyes have a tendency to smear, so add those at the very end and don’t touch them until you’re ready to serve. The Wilton candy eyes are the best that we have tried! It seems the cheaper grocery store brands will smear no matter what you do.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Storing it longer isn’t unsafe, but the snack mix won’t taste as fresh.
Affordable ingredients, universal flavors, and fun toppings make this snack mix perfect for serving a crowd.
Just looking at this yummy treat will bring out your inner candy monster, and you’ll love serving up this super cute and creepy showstopper at any event! But of course, the best part is gobbling it up, and trust me, it’s scary good!
