Why are my homemade Rice Krispies Treats hard?
- Your homemade Rice Krispie treats may turn out hard if you start with stale marshmallows or press them too firmly into the pan.
Can you make Rice Crispy treats with no butter?
- You can absolutely make classic Rice Krispies treats without butter. Just swap the butter in the Rice Krispie mixture for coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. (Make sure it’s extra virgin so you won’t taste the olive oil at all. You can taste the coconut oil a bit, but it’s subtle and delicious!)

Variations and substitutions:
- Use any type of puffed rice cereal in place of classic Rice Krispies.
- Mix in a cup of chocolate chips. (When I do, I use mini chocolate chips.)
- Add candy eyes or candy corn to your decorations.
- Melt candy melts and drizzle different colors over the top of your treats.
Tips and Tricks:
- Don’t press down too firmly at any point in the process. You could pack the treats too firmly, or you could mash the candy decorations.
- If you don’t have a nonstick pan handy, prepare your pan with nonstick cooking spray, parchment paper, or wax paper.
- Store in an airtight container, or tightly covered with plastic wrap. They stay fresh for a couple of days and become firmer over time.
I love that I can run to a local grocery store, grab some affordable ingredients, and follow super simple steps to make festive treats during this busy time of year. I have costumes to make, trick-or-treat candy to buy, school events to help with, decorations to put up… This is the easiest way to whip up a yummy batch of individual-serving treats.
These easy treats remain a go-to recipe for good reasons. Sweet, chewy, crunchy, individually portioned, handheld, no-bake… are there any cons at all? Halloween Reese’s make the perfect addition in both flavor and texture. They enhance the melt-in-your-mouth goodness, and classic peanut butter and chocolate flavors go perfectly with the marshmallow flavor.
