How long do you soak skewers for candy kabobs? Soak bamboo skewers or wooden skewers for approximately 5 minutes before lightly patting dry and assembling. If the skewers dry out, just submerge them again for a few minutes.
Can you make candy kabobs ahead of time? I don’t recommend making these more than an hour ahead of serving time because the candies dry out. But you can design them ahead of time so you’re ready to go.
Or, if you’re making these as party favors, go ahead and make them the night before, just make sure you seal them up tightly with a twist tie in cellophane bags within an hour of making them. Even with the cellophane bags, the candies only stay fresh for a day or two, so don’t jump the gun!

Halloween Candy Kabobs
Ingredients for gummy candy kabobs:
- Nerds rope or sour belts
- Peeps ghosts, pumpkins, and monsters
- Giant candy corn
- Sour gummy worms
- Gummy eyeballs, fingers, worms, and orange slices
- Bug candies
- Fangs candies
(I found a lot of these candies at Oriental Trading Company and at Target)
Directions on how to make the perfect candy skewer:
1. Soak skewers in water for five minutes, or until no dry spots remain, so the candies don’t snag and drag stickiness all over them. Quickly pat the excess water off, but do not allow it to dry.
2. Lay out candies in the design of your choice. It’s much easier to rearrange the candies for maximum cuteness if you haven’t already skewered them.
3. Poke the bamboo skewer through the thickest part of the candy then slide into place. Leave room at the bottom of the stick so guests can hold them without getting sticky fingers. Serve immediately.
Variations and substitutions:
Most gummy candies work great on a wooden skewer or bamboo skewer! Try sour belts, gummy ribbons, gummy bears, gummy sharks, Skittles gummies, Lifesavers gummies, Swedish Fish, Jolly Rancher gummies, Sour Patch Kids, Dots, Twizzlers…
The only problem with these sweet candy kabobs is deciding which sweet treats to stack!
Arrange your candy sticks in a cute vase filled with small candies like candy corn or M&M’s for an adorable candy bouquet.
Tips and Tricks:
- I used 10-inch bamboo skewers, but you can use whatever size you have on hand, and wooden skewers work as well. Just make sure your pieces of candy make sense for the size of the skewer. Super small candies are a no-go… unless you’re using toothpicks.
- Some candies, like the Halloween Peeps, may leave some residue. Use a damp paper towel or washcloth to wipe down the skewer after loading them.
- Chocolate candies might be easy to skewer, but they make such a mess when you handle them and skewer them. The wipe-down technique can’t save the end result from looking sloppy, plus the chocolates can melt or crumble off the skewers.
Gummy candy kabobs make great additions to any dessert table or party. Next time you need a quick route to show-stopping sweet treats, stack up your own candy sticks.
