FAQs:
Are melted marshmallows and marshmallow fluff the same thing?
- Nope, but pretty close! Marshmallow fluff doesn’t contain gelatin, so it stays soft and spreadable. On the other hand, the gelatin in actual marshmallows sets their shape and texture more firmly, and they’re not gooey at room temperature.
- Even though they’re not the same, they taste pretty much the same and can sometimes be used interchangeably as toppers, but not as incorporated elements.
Why won’t my marshmallows melt?
- The most likely culprit for stubbornly solid or clumpy marshmallows is staleness. Whether the bag was left unsealed or just sitting around too long, those squishy little sugar pillows dry out! It’s pretty hard to melt food that doesn’t contain much moisture, and the end product of melted, dried food would be pretty inedible.
Supplies for Easy Oven S’Mores:

- Serving trays or dishes for dippers
Easy S’Mores in the Oven
Ingredients for Indoor S’Mores:
- 3 Hershey’s milk chocolate bars
- Chocolate chips (optional)
- 2 cups mini marshmallows
Our dippers:
- 1 cup pretzels
- Nutter Butter cookies
- Honey Maid graham cracker squares, separated
- Fresh strawberries
Directions for this gooey S’Mores in the oven dessert:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
2. Break apart Hershey’s milk chocolate bars and then layer in a baking dish – we used a pizzookie iron skillet. Optional: Fill in the holes with chocolate chips for a thicker, more chocolatey layer.
3. Spread a single layer of store-bought marshmallows over the chocolate layer.
4. Bake for 8-10 minutes, peeking in the oven frequently to make sure the marshmallows aren’t burning.
5. Remove from oven when marshmallows are a light golden brown and allow to cool for 1-2 minutes before serving.
Variations and substitutions for your smores in oven:
Use Reese’s peanut butter cups or white chocolate bars in place of the chocolate bar.
Try these other delish dippers:
- Fudge-striped cookies
- Ritz crackers
- Chocolate chip cookies
- Brownies
- Girl Scouts cookies
- Waffles
- Pop Tarts
- Waffle cones
Skip the oven and feed your inner air fryer fanatic. You can use the same ingredients and method, but make sure you cover or weigh down the mini marshmallows so they don’t fly around and get stuck to the heating element.
Once the chocolate and marshmallows get melty enough, you can uncover the dish and allow the marshmallows to brown for 1-2 minutes before serving. You can also use large marshmallows to stay on the safe side and avoid tiny marshmallow UFO’s from escaping and gunking up your machine.
Tips and Tricks:
Make sure this classic treat turns out absolutely perfect by setting your timer for 2-3 minute intervals to check the oven. The only way to determine if your marshmallows are perfectly toasted is by eye!
As they get closer to the ideal color, set the timer for shorter intervals of about 20-45 seconds so you don’t miss that golden window.
(If you’re like me, you think you’ll remember to check the oven in 20 seconds, but get distracted until the oven starts smoking… So much fun. I’m not ditzy okay, I’m just busy!)
For a darker, crispier marshmallow top, whack the oven up to 450 degrees instead of 425. And keep a super close eye on the color!
