Forget basic cupcakes! This Sunday, we’re bringing the entire stadium to the dessert table. These football mini cakes and football cupcakes are the perfect way to show your team spirit. Whether you’re rooting for a Seattle victory or a New England win, these “Fans in the Stands” treats are a guaranteed touchdown.

The best part? No complicated recipes here—just some clever assembly with your favorite cake batter and a few decorating hacks!
What You’ll Need
- The Base: Your favorite cake mix (baked in mini loaf tins and oval cupcake liners).
- The Football: Chocolate frosting or ganache.
- The Grass: Vanilla frosting tinted green (two shades of green add great depth!).
- The Fans: Team-colored sprinkles (Red/White/Blue for the Patriots and Blue/Green/Silver for the Seahawks).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare the Footballs and the Stadium
To form the oval football cupcakes, start with an aluminum cupcake ramekins and with your fingers on opposite sides, slowly pull outward until the circle forms a football shape. Fill 2/3 full with your favorite cake batter.
Fill mini loaf pans with remaining cake batter. Place mini loaves and balls on a cookie sheet.

Bake your mini loaf cakes and oval cupcakes on a until golden. Let them cool completely.
Decorate the “Football” Cupcakes
- Spread a smooth layer of chocolate frosting or ganache over the oval cupcakes. Use an offset spatula to smooth it out.
- Using a thin round tip (or a pre-made icing tube), pipe white “laces” across the center to turn them into mini footballs.

Create the “Fans in the Stands”
- The Guard: Place a piece of clear plastic (or a stiff piece of cardstock) across the middle of your mini loaf cake (this protects the area you will be making grass on). I used the clear cover that comes with the mini loaves and cut it to the size I wanted to protect.
- The Crowd: Spread a thin layer of white frosting on one half. While the guard is still in place, pour your team-colored sprinkles over the frosting. Press them down gently so they stick, then lift the guard to reveal a perfectly straight “stadium” line.
- The Rivalry: Repeat on the other side with the opposing team’s colors!

Grow the Grass
- Fill a piping bag with your green frosting using a grass tip.
- Pipe “turf” along the center of the cake and the edges. Squeeze, pull up, and stop pressure to get those realistic blades of grass.

The Finishing Touches
Top your cakes with “Game Day” flags or little football picks. Line them up on a green tray to create your own edible end zone!

Pro-Tip for the Big Game
If you’re hosting a mixed crowd, make half the loaves with a “neutral” field in the center and half with the “fans” battling it out. It’s a great conversation starter (and much tastier than a foam finger).
