Dirty Soda – is it a trend, or a tradition? Dirty sodas are taking over social media, but for me, they feel like a piece of my childhood. I moved from Argentina to the USA in 1974, where we always made “sparklers” by mixing concentrated syrups with bubbly water.

Today, I’m giving that tradition a modern, “cleaner” twist using Poppi prebiotic soda. This specific recipe creates a beautiful celeste (sky blue) and white gradient that reminds me of the Argentine flag—perfect for a summer treat that’s Tried, Tested, and Never AI.
Dirty Soda vs. Italian Soda: What’s the Difference
You might be wondering: “Isn’t this just an Italian Soda?” Not quite!
- Italian Soda: Typically uses unflavored sparkling water (Seltzer) as the base.
- Dirty Soda: Uses a flavored soda (like Lemon Lime Poppi or Cola) as the base, then adds syrups and cream for a richer, “dirtier” flavor profile.
The Dirty Soda Toolbox: What You’ll Need
Before you start pouring, make sure you have these simple essentials on hand.
- First, Pebble Ice (or Nugget Ice) is the “secret sauce” of a true dirty soda; its porous texture holds the flavor better than large cubes, but if you don’t have a special maker, crushed ice from your fridge works just fine!
- You’ll also want a tall, clear glass to show off those beautiful layers. I like a 24 oz glass or bigger to get everything in there!
- To get that signature café-style topping, a handheld milk frother is a must-have for blending your cream and syrup into a thick, velvety foam.
- Finally, grab a jigger or a tablespoon set for precise measuring and a long spoon or glass straw to give it that final, satisfying stir.
The Recipe: The Argentina Sparkler
- Prep time: 2 minutes
- Yields: 1 Large (16-20 oz) Drink
Ingredients
- Base: 2 oz Blue Raspberry Syrup (Monin is my favorite!)
- Soda: 1 can (12 oz) Lemon Lime Poppi
- The “Dirty” Topping: 6 tbsp Heavy Cream mixed with 1 oz Strawberry Syrup

Instructions
- In a separate cup, combine your strawberry syrup and cream. Froth until you have a thick, bubbly pink foam. Set aside.
- Fill a tall glass to the brim with ice. Pour 2 oz of blue raspberry syrup over the ice.
- Slowly pour the Lemon Lime Poppi over the ice.
- Gently pour your frothed strawberry cream over the top.
- Stir to combine and watch the colors transform into a beautiful light blue.

- Separation: If you find your cream separating, it’s often the acidity of the soda reacting with the dairy. There is nothing wrong, except maybe you are drinking it fast enough 😉
