Do I need to use French bread to make French toast?

You can use almost any kind of bread to make French toast! King’s Hawaiian bread, sourdough, cinnamon bread, seeded bread, and even plain white bread are all good alternatives. I avoid using super dense or strongly flavored breads like rye though.

Do I need to use stale bread to make French toast?

You do not need to use stale bread to make French toast. It is often used because a drier bread will of course absorb more of the egg mixture than a fresh, moist loaf. However, the bread will usually be dry enough to make French toast within a day. So unless your bread was baked today, go ahead and use it!

Supplies for this easy French toast recipe:

  • serrated bread knife
  • mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • nonstick skillet or griddle (Ok, so this griddle has got to be my favorite piece of kitchen equipment EVER. Gordon Ramsey hexclad pans are a dream to cook on. Expensive? Yes. But you will never have to replace it ever ever ever. Clean-up was an absolute dream, too! I decided that I NEEEEEED the entire set!!!)
  • tongs or spatula

I must interrupt this recipe for my HexClad Pans Review because I’m obsessed. Shown above is the Hexclad Hybrid Griddle Pan and trust me on this, it’s a heaven to cook on.

Aren’t they pretty!!? These Hexclad pans…are they worth the price? Do they live up to the hype? The quick answer is YES! Do I use them? YESSSS! Do I let my husband use them? Well, if he is supervised, but only because I want to keep them nice and shiny for a few more months. I am not sure what kind of pixie dust these things are made of, but they are literally the Rolls Royce of Pans. Super easy to use, high-quality products with a non-stick surface.

Hexclad pans have stay-cool handles and the nonstick surface heats evenly like nothing that I have ever used before. The Hell’s Kitchen celebrity chef and the Hexclad team really went all out. I have 3 frying pans and the square skillet and I won’t use anything else. Perfect as a gift, whether it is gifted to you, or if you gift it to yourself!!! You can shop Hexclad products here.

Now. Carry on. Back to our regular scheduled programming.

6. Place soaked rolls onto the preheated pan. The size of your pan will determine how many you can cook at once. Just make sure they’re not too crowded in there.

7. When you see crispy edges forming on the bottom, flip them over with your tongs or spatula. When the other side is done, you can pull them out or quickly brown the other sides for extra caramelization and texture.

Variations and substitutions:

Offer a variety of toppings so everyone can make their own perfect sweet breakfast treats! Here are some ideas from our kitchen:

  • Fresh berries
  • Fresh pineapple
  • Sliced bananas
  • Chocolate chips
  • Honey
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Caramel sauce
  • Strawberry syrup
  • Blueberry syrup
  • Apricot jam
  • Peanut butter
  • Almond butter
  • Nutella
  • Whipped cream
  • Sprinkles
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Pumpkin spice

Tips and Tricks:

  • Wait until your pan is evenly heated before cooking. If the temperature is too low, you’ll get soggy French toast waiting for the outside to caramelize!
  • I don’t like my French toast too cinnamon-y, but you can add as much cinnamon as your taste buds desire.
  • I used whole milk but you can also use heavy whipping cream, half and half, or 2% milk. I don’t recommend using skim because the fat content is important for this recipe. Life is too short for skim milk anyway!
  • Halve our recipe and use your leftover Hawaiian rolls for a mini-batch.
  • French toast does not keep well, so if you want to save some for later, put it in a freezer bag and reheat on a busy morning.
